Chengmai County is located in the northeast of Hainan Island, adjoining to Haikou, the provincial capital.
It was founded in the first Yuanfeng year of the Western Han Dynasty (110 BC), over 2100 years ago.
Chengmai was named after the first characters of Chengiang River, in the west of the county, and Maishan Mountain, in the east.
Chengmai is China's first longevity county certified by the United Nations. The amount of negative ions per cubic centimeter in the air is 1100/m3 on average, reaching Grade A. The soil there contains basalts, making water in wells mineral water that is free from contamination and contains trace elements human body needs, like selenium. Meilang Twin Pagodas
According to the legend, Meilang Twin Pagodas in the Meiting Village of Chengmai County, which was listed as first-grade cultural relics site under the state protection, was built by Chen Daoxu, a resident of the Song Dynasty, in honor of his two daughters 800 years ago. The pagoda in honor of the older sister is hexagonal with 7 lavers, 13.6 meters high, and the other quadrangular, also with 7 layers, 12.55 meters high. Both pagodas were built with basalt from Qiongbei Volcano, using unique architecture technique of the mortise-and-tenon joint and simple stack of the dressed stones without gluing to each other. And there are dozens of realistic reliefs in the pagodas. All these superb architecture and carving skill make the Twin Pagodas outstanding and stunning among their kind.
