      Meilang Twin Towers

Meilang Twin Towers, also known as the Twin Towers, are located in the southeast of Meilang Village, Chengmai County. The Twin Towers are built in Yuan Dynasty with basalt from the volcanic area of northern Hainan. Their construction technology was unique as the architect adopted mortise-tenon joints and all the slates used to build the towers were simply piled up on one another. According to an ancient book, Chen Daoxu, a resident in Yuan Dynasty, had two daughters. The elder one was married while the younger became a nun. In memory of his two daughters, he built Meilang Twin Towers. The towers have exquisite appearance with a dozen of vividly carved stone statues, which reflect people’s living conditions in the early Yuan Dynasty. Meilang Twin Towers are no doubt an art treasure in Hainan. As two of the few existing stone towers in Hainan, Meilang Twin Towers were listed as the fourth batch of national key cultural relics by the State Council in 1996.
